FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What services does Back Porch Accounting offer?

Back Porch Accounting provides bookkeeping, tax preparation, payroll support, budgeting, and financial planning for small businesses and self-employed entrepreneurs. My goal is to help you stay organized, understand your finances, and make confident financial decisions for your business.

Who do you work with?

Back Porch Accounting focuses on small business owners and self-employed entrepreneurs such as freelancers, contractors, and independent professionals. Whether you're just starting out or running an established business, I provide personalized accounting support designed for smaller operations.

What’s the difference between bookkeeping and accounting?

Bookkeeping focuses on the day-to-day recording and organization of financial transactions—things like tracking income, recording expenses, reconciling bank accounts, and keeping your financial records up to date.

Accounting goes a step further by analyzing and interpreting those financial records to support things like tax preparation, budgeting, financial planning, and business decision-making.

In simple terms, bookkeeping keeps your financial records organized, while accounting helps you understand what those numbers mean for your business and how to plan ahead.

At Back Porch Accounting, I offer both bookkeeping and accounting services, so whether you need help keeping your books up to date or understanding your financial picture and planning for the future, I can support you in both areas.

When should I hire a bookkeeper?

Many small business owners start managing their own books, which is completely understandable when you're just getting started. However, it may be time to hire a bookkeeper when:

  • You’re spending too much time on bookkeeping instead of running your business
  • Your financial records are falling behind
  • You’re unsure if your numbers are accurate
  • Tax time becomes stressful or confusing
  • Your business is growing and transactions are increasing

Hiring a bookkeeper helps ensure your finances stay organized so you can focus on serving your clients and growing your business.

Do you offer virtual or remote services?

Yes. Back Porch Accounting primarily operates remotely, making it easy for small business owners and self-employed entrepreneurs to manage their accounting without needing frequent office visits. Documents can be securely shared online, and most communication can happen through email, phone, or video calls.

That said, initial onboarding may sometimes include an in-person meeting, especially if you’re local. I believe relationships matter, and it can be helpful to sit down together when getting started.

Even though most work is done remotely, I enjoy keeping things personal—so don’t be surprised if I occasionally suggest grabbing coffee or lunch to catch up and see how you and your business are doing.

What accounting software do you work with?

I commonly work with accounting and business platforms like QuickBooks, Square, Microsoft Excel, and Mariana Tek, along with other tools used by small businesses.

If you’re not currently using accounting software—or if your current setup isn’t working well for you—I can help you choose the right system and get everything organized so it’s easier to track income, expenses, and overall financial performance.

How often should my bookkeeping be updated?

Most small businesses benefit from monthly bookkeeping updates. This keeps financial records accurate, makes tax preparation easier, and helps you understand how your business is performing throughout the year.

That said, I understand that small businesses and self-employed entrepreneurs often need to be mindful of costs. If monthly bookkeeping doesn’t make sense for your situation, I also offer quarterly bookkeeping reviews to help keep your records organized and make sure everything stays on track throughout the year.

Can you help if my books are behind?

Absolutely. Many small business owners get busy and fall behind on bookkeeping. I offer bookkeeping cleanup services to organize past records and bring everything up to date.

Do you offer Budgeting and Financial Planning?

Yes. I help small business owners and self-employed professionals create practical budgets and financial plans. This can include planning for taxes, managing cash flow, setting revenue goals, and preparing for business growth.

What documents do I need to get started?

Typically, I’ll need access to bank and credit card statements, previous tax returns, and any bookkeeping records you currently have. I’ll guide you through the process so you know exactly what’s needed.

How much do your services cost?

Pricing depends on the services you need and the complexity of your business finances. After a short consultation, I’ll provide a clear and transparent quote so you know exactly what to expect.
